This hsn code check tool lets you type a 2, 4, 6 or 8 digit code and see whether it exists in the official HSN master used under GST, along with its chapter, heading and sub-heading descriptions. It also tells you how many digits a business must print on its invoices for its turnover.
You will find the checker just under the facts panel; it works entirely on your device and keeps no record of the codes you enter. Below are the steps, how to read the result, how to check a code on the GST portal, and the common reasons a code fails. For the rate of a code, use the GST rate finder.

How to check hsn code with the checker
- Type the code without spaces or with them: 2523, 2523 29 or 25232910 all work.
- The checker tests the format (digits only, 2 to 8 digits) and looks the code up in the HSN master.
- If the code exists, it shows the chapter, heading and sub-heading descriptions, so you can confirm it matches your product.
- If it does not exist, it says so; try a shorter code to find the nearest valid heading.
- Check the digits note: up to Rs 5 crore turnover, 4 digits on B2B invoices; above that, at least 6.
Hsn code validator: reading the result
A valid code proves only that the code exists, not that it is right for your product. A dealer who bills cement under 2520 (gypsum) will get a valid result, but the code is wrong. Always read the description shown and compare it with the product. When the description at 4 digits fits but you are unsure at 8 digits, printing 6 digits is safer than guessing the last two.
How to check hsn code in GST portal
The GST portal has a search facility for HSN and SAC codes in the services section, without logging in. You can search by code or by description and download the master list. The checker on this page uses the same master, so the result should agree. If the portal shows a newer change, follow the portal.
Hsn code verification: common reasons a code fails
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Old code no longer in the tariff | Search the product name in the HSN code finder for the current code |
| Typing error, such as 25233 | Check the digit count; codes are 2, 4, 6 or 8 digits |
| Using a SAC code | Services codes start with 99; they are in the SAC list |
| Country specific code from abroad | Indian codes match only at 6 digits; the last two may differ |
| Code made up from a product's model number | Model numbers are not HSN codes |
Hsn code checker and digits on invoices
Notification rules require businesses with aggregate turnover up to Rs 5 crore in the previous year to show 4 digit HSN on B2B invoices, and those above Rs 5 crore to show 6 digits on all invoices. More detail is on the HSN digits page. The GSTR-1 HSN summary uses the same digit rule.
