Iron and steel in every form, from billets to articles

The steel hsn code you need sits in Chapter 72 for iron and steel as materials (billets, sheets, bars, angles, wire) or Chapter 73 for articles made of them (pipes, structures, fasteners, utensils), and GST on iron and steel is 18% almost everywhere. The few lower rated lines are small, such as steel geometry boxes at 5%.

This hub lists the headings, links every page in the metals and machinery group, and explains the points traders get wrong: scrap, fabrication and articles under 7326. Start with TMT bars, MS plates, pipes or angles and channels.

7326 hsn code gst rate and when to use it

Heading 7326 is the residual heading for articles of iron or steel that no other heading covers: metal boxes, brackets, hooks, steel scale rulers, cable trays and many fabricated parts. The rate is 18%, except geometry boxes, mathematical boxes and colour boxes, which are 5%. Before using 7326, check 7308 (structures), 7323 (household articles), 7325 (cast articles) and 7318 (fasteners). 7325 is used for cast iron articles such as manhole covers.

Gst on steel bars, sheets and wire

All the common forms of steel sold by a steel trader are 18%: TMT bars, MS rounds, HR and CR sheets, GI sheets, angles, channels, beams, GI wire and binding wire. Steel almirahs are furniture under 9403, and steel kitchen utensils are 7323. Wire rope is 7312.

Iron scrap hsn code and steel scrap

Iron and steel scrap is 7204 at 18%. Scrap trading carries special risks: buyers must check the seller's registration and returns, since fake invoices are common in this trade. Scrap sold by a government department or a body corporate may attract TCS or reverse charge in some cases. See the scrap codes page.

Steel on an invoice and e-way bill

Steel trader's bill to a builder in another state: TMT bars 12 mm, HSN 7214 20, 5 tonnes, taxable value Rs 2,75,000. IGST 18% Rs 49,500. Total Rs 3,24,500.

Steel moves in large loads, so an e-way bill is almost always needed. Weighbridge slips and the e-way bill weight should match the invoice. A builder buying steel for its own office building cannot take credit, since section 17(5) blocks credit for constructing immovable property; a contractor making a taxable works contract can.

Shared rules for the metal group

Steel traders deal with the same handful of issues whatever they sell. Keep these in mind across every page of the group: - Most metals and their articles are 18%, so a wrong heading rarely changes tax but does break the HSN summary. - Fabrication at the client's site can turn into a works contract (SAC 9954) rather than a sale of goods. - Job work on the client's steel is a service at a separate rate; see job work. - Print at least 6 digits above Rs 5 crore turnover; steel buyers often ask for 8. - Keep the weight, rate per tonne and HSN on the bill consistent with the e-way bill, because mismatches are a common reason for vehicles being stopped and goods detained on the road.

This hub is a general guide to iron and steel under the present rate schedules. Product shape, alloy content and end use can move an item between headings, and the Council revises rates, so confirm the exact entry on the GST portal and consult a GST practitioner or chartered accountant on difficult items.
